Cake is delicious, but even we will admit that sometimes it’s time for a change. With the continuing rise of Pinterest where excited brides hoard unique ideas for their big day, more and more couples are moving away from the traditional tiered fruitcake and into the realm of unusual desserts. Does that sound like you, but you’re not sure where to start? Well, we’re here to help.
1. Brownies
Brownies are a sweet snack that very few can refuse. Imagine; glistening and glorious brownies stacked high on a table, oozing chocolate and just waiting to be enjoyed. How does that sound? Incredible, right? Brownies are the perfect alternative to the traditional wedding cake, and they’re already cut up for your guests to enjoy. If you’re on a budget, you’ll be pleased to hear that they won’t break the bank and you could even have multiple recipes on display for people to sample. Or why not serve them up with some delicious vanilla ice cream?
2. Cheese cake
Depending on whether you love or hate cheesecake, your mouth may or may not have started watering at the very mention of the word. We’re sorry to disappoint but we’re not talking about the actual dessert itself. Instead we’re talking about a tiered cake actually constructed from wheels of different types of cheeses.
It’s actually becoming more and more popular nowadays; brides and grooms are opting for something a little more savoury alongside, or instead of, the traditional sweetness. If this sounds right up your street, why not add a few different varieties of crackers nearby so guests can sample the different layers?
3. Cake pops
We’ve all heard of cupcakes but have you heard of cake pops? These little delicious bite size pieces are still technically cake but are perfect if you want something more modern at your wedding. Essentially they’re exactly what you’d expect; small balls of cake dipped in icing and decorated and served on a handy stick. You can colour co-ordinate to your heart’s content and decorate them exactly how you please to suit your theme.
4. Doughnuts
A classic dessert that everyone can get on board with no matter whether it’s 30 degrees or blowing a gale outside. Jammy, ring, sugar glazed, frosted or coated in sprinkles; everyone loves a doughnut. We guarantee that this dessert idea will go down an absolute treat. Your only problem may be that you didn’t order enough.
Of course, this is your wedding day, so you don’t want dozens of day old packets from your local supermarket. The same way you would with a traditional cake, why not reach out to a local bakery or pastry shop to see if they can create something unique for your big day? You could even give a nod back to the traditional fruitcake by stacking your doughnuts to mimic multiple tiers.
5. Sweet table
There’s nothing like a wedding to get people feeling nostalgic, and everyone’s got a sweet tooth when it comes to a celebration, so why not put the two together? Sweet tables are another option that are becoming more and more popular, and they’re super easy to set up yourself. All you have to do is collect jars, tubs and cheap glassware, bulk buy your favourite old style sweets and set them up on a table at your chosen wedding venue. Some of our old favourites include sherbet-filled spaceship, liquorice, bonbons, jelly beans, and white mice. What are some of yours?
